Dark Upper Arch Gum Lasing to Healthy Pink

As discussed on the Melanin Laser Treatment page, certain cultural factors and imbalances of pigmentation components form the basis for unusual colorations of ginigival tissues.

One case of splotchy looking gum tissue was described and demonstrated the actual use of Opus Dent laser technology by Dr. Bram for removing the unwanted tissue, with good results.

Another patient, a young female, had a long standing history of having upper and lower gingiva tissues with excess melanin deposits. Her particular pigmentation issue consisted of a solid band of dark tissues that descended directly onto the papillary tissue of each and every upper arch tooth.

Our first preop treatment photo shows the extent of discoloration. Notice the uniformity of the melanin deposits across all of her upper teeth.

The lower arch was not as significantly affected. Despite having otherwise healthy gingival tissues our patient still felt self conscious about smiling too much. Simply put... she felt she had an ugly smile.

Our patient's primary request for treatment was to treat the most affected arch first. The second, lower arch, would be treated in a subsequent treatment plan, to be implemented at a later date.

OpusDent Gingiva Tissue Lasing

As with our other Melanin Removal Treatment Plans, Dr. Bram used the Erbium:YAG Laser to treat the entire upper arch of our patient. All lasing procedures were completed in one treatment session.

Special lasing tips and low power emissions enabled the patient to complete her treatment with little or no discomfort. No topical nor oral anesthetic medications were used. Pain was relatively a non-issue.

Our postop treatment picture shows the successful uniform removal off all the excess deposits of melanin on the upper arch gingiva. Coloration of the upper arch is an attractive, healthy looking pink ... all the way to the papillary tissues of each and every tooth structure.

Our patient was thrilled with the outcome. For the first time in many many years, our young patient was able to start smiling with ease, comfort and well founded self confidence, knowing that the dark gum smile no longer existed. Her lower arch didn't show in most of her smile behaviors.

Future cosmetic treatments will include treatment for the lower arch, along with other aesthetic and restorative treatments.
