Two other treatments or procedures are currently known to be used for altering or removing the appearance of excess melanin.

Periodontal Surgery involving the excising (removing) of tissue from the roof of the mouth and then grafted into the affected areas is available through some periodontists. An invasive surgery requiring extensive suturing, it is a treatment option that is not too appealing for many patients.
2.
Gum Bleaching, using proprietary bleaching solutions alter the coloration of the pigmentation directly. Since the cellular structures that create melanin are not removed, there is a likelihood that excess pigmentation can recur. Some patients may have sensitivity issues with the bleaching compounds.
