Dark Gums - An Anatomy

Melanin Pigmentation

Unusual ginigival pigmentation characteristics typically occur more frequently in some cultures, as compared to others. With the effects of cross-cultural population growth and globalization, these culture-specific pigmentation issues are becoming more commonplace.

A common complaint centers on having brown or dark brown splotchy gums. For some patients the effects are more pronounced, resulting in a darkened, solid shade of brown throughout all tissues. A common restorative goal for patients with excess melanin deposits is simply the desire to have healthy pink gums.

The Causes of Dark Gum Tissue

Melanin, carotene and hemoglobin are the common pigments that contribute to the coloration of gum tissue. Imbalances of these pigmentation components cause the variations in cosmetic appearance. In some instances the condition is known as black gums.

The Erbium:YAG Laser was consistently found by Dr. Bram to provide the most efficient and safe treatment for altering melanin pigmentation in the gingival tissues, thereby producing aesthetically correct pink gums.

Healthy Pink Gum Tissue - Everyone's Goal

Almost any degree of pigmentation problem can be overcome with skilled application of an Erbium Laser. As can be seen in our after photo ... pink gums are an alluring and attractive goal for many our patients.

Lasing treatments for removing melanin deposits incorporate a minimum of anesthesia... usually just a topical treatment. The process is essentially pain free. Itchy gums are often reported during the first few days after treatment.

Contact Dr. Bram and his staff today at (718) 229-3232 to arrange a complimentary evaluation that will provide the objective information you need for considering treatment for obtaining healthy and cosmetically attractive gingival tissues or gums.
